RESEARCHES ON ADVANCES IN FOREST ECOSYSTEM MONITORING
This book encompasses various methodologies and applications developed for forest ecosystem monitoring, highlighting technological advancements and innovations in data analysis. The first chapter focuses on predicting aboveground biomass (AGB) in pure Scots pine stands in Turkey using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) and stepwise regression techniques. Using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and field measurements, it was demonstrated that the MARS model outperforms traditional regression in both accuracy and generalization. The second chapter addresses the inclusion of categorical effects such as stand density via dummy variable regression, significantly improving biomass prediction accuracy. The third chapter applies deep learning algorithms YOLOv8 and YOLOv10 for early real-time detection of forest fires, with the YOLOv8-x model showing superior precision, recall, and F1-score. The fourth and fifth chapters evaluate the infestation impacts of Pine Processionary Moth and Ips sexdentatus pests using remote sensing techniques, revealing significant reductions in NDVI values correlating with defoliation and damage. The sixth chapter discusses the critical role of time series analysis in the wood products industry to analyze production trends, seasonal fluctuations, and cyclical patterns to support strategic decision-making. The book aims to serve as a scientific resource for forestry professionals, environmental experts, and decision-makers, offering insight into effective forest ecosystem monitoring and management integrated with innovative technologies.
