Structural and Electronic Properties of Molecular Systems: A Density Functional Theory And Quantum Chemical Methods Approach
This book addresses the role of Density Functional Theory (DFT) and quantum chemical methods in investigating the structural and electronic properties of molecular systems. The first chapter presents a comparative analysis of exchange-correlation functionals and pseudopotentials used in DFT simulations, evaluating different functional families in terms of accuracy and computational cost. Additionally, norm-conserving, ultrasoft, and PAW pseudopotential formalisms are discussed regarding transferability and convergence, providing practical selection guidelines. The second chapter focuses on quantum chemical calculations and Hirshfeld surface analysis of 3-benzyl-2H-chromen-2-one, examining its molecular structure, electronic properties, and crystal interactions. A high agreement is found between experimental and theoretical geometries, while the HOMO-LUMO gap indicates that the molecule is stable with moderate reactivity. Hirshfeld surface analysis reveals that van der Waals forces and weak hydrogen bonds play key roles in crystal stability. The third chapter studies the naturally extracted compound (S)-8-hydroxychromenone, showing consistency between experimental and DFT results. The molecule exhibits electronic stability due to its extensive π-conjugation and has clearly defined electrophilic and nucleophilic reactive sites. Hirshfeld surface analysis again emphasizes the importance of H···H and O···H interactions in crystal packing stabilization. Overall, the volume highlights how DFT and quantum chemical methods effectively contribute to understanding structure-activity relationships through molecular and crystal structure analyses.
